On 13th September 2018, the Public Petitions Committee at Holyrood certified our petition (PE01700) calling for a section 30 order to the Scottish Parliament.
This was the first huge hurdle.
The petition stipulated:
“To ask the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to seek a section 30 order from the UK Government to enable it to bring forward legislation in the Scottish Parliament to hold a second referendum on Scotland’s independence from the United Kingdom.”
The purpose of this petition is simple. To have a vote at Holyrood called to have the Scottish Goverment to seek a section 30 order in order to build the legislative framework for holding a second independence referendum as a safeguard so the Scottish Parliament can hold that vote when the brexit negotiations inevitably go south.
It will also show whether Westminster is willing to grant permission for a second referendum or prove once and for all that they are as undemocratic as we believe them to be, in which case the Scottish Government will know once and for all and can take steps to create legislation to hold a referendum independent of Westminster permission before we are dragged off the brexit cliff edge.
This is in-line with the First Ministers promise to hold a referendum when the terms of brexit are known. It is not asking for the referendum now, it is asking for the legislation to be prepared to hold the referendum as soon as we know the details of brexit or if negotiation collapse completely.
We now need everyone to support this to make a vote happen in the chamber.
On the 16th of September 2018, the convener of Forward as One wrote an open letter to all MSP’s – It can be read HERE
We have set up a simple petition below that you can sign and we will submit it on your behalf.
Alternatively please email your MSP’s saying that you want them to call a vote on and/or support a section 30 order within 60 days.
